Bio
Terry Coker Peterson has been involved with art her entire life. After receiving a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), she worked in a variety of art related fields; a silk-screener, illustrator, art teacher, art camp director and designer of print publications and outdoor exhibits. This varied background allows Terry to apply her creative skills to a variety of media, including oil painting, charcoal and graphite, water color and digital collage. For the past few years, though, she has been concentrating on plein air oil painting. She has participated in solo and group shows throughout Maryland and recently won the first place award at the Maryland Federation of Art Fall Show. She is a resident of Annapolis, Maryland.
Terry's painting technique involves building up areas of color and value through thin layers of transparent color, achieving a rich textured surface that is vibrant with color. She enjoys playing with complimentary colors, surprising the eye with the unexpected. Most paintings start from life, but reference photos are taken for fine-tuning when she finishes the painting in her studio. In the studio, she finds the opportunity to step back from the immediacy of the life or plein air painting and is able to address more academic principles of art.
In Our Words
The intimacy of Terry Coker Peterson's paintings are most evident in their lighting; diffused sunlight filtering through the trees to expose a hidden glen or the highlights on soft skin as a nude woman reads in the afternoon. Serenity emanates from her scenes, bringing expressive and deeply thoughtful qualities to her paintings.
