Patch Somerville grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York. He started his formal training as an artist at PrattMWP in Utica, New York, where he was the recipient of the 2006 John Loy Honors Award. After receiving the 2006 Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Transfer Scholarship, he earned his BFA from MICA in December of 2008.
Patch finds his technical challenge in using abstract expressionist qualities as well as representational renderings in his paintings, but places importance on letting the painting happen naturally.
He tends to make the space in his paintings equivalent to his perceived life size, which helps the viewer to visually enter the image. Often, he tries to convey how a room feels by warping the perspective to express his own perception. Time becomes a presence in his paintings through the movement of figures or objects.
In Patch Somerville's paintings, figures appear in dream-like fragments and fleeting glimpses, amidst a frenetic palette of intense colors. Part abstract, part representational, his paintings pique curiosity with their unusual perspectives and invite the viewer to decipher his vision.
