Bio
Kathleen Lemoine was born in New Orleans and currently lives and works in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She believes the landscape which an artist first experiences as a child forms the very basis of his or her art; she credits the tropical, urban, park-like landscape of New Orleans with some of her most powerful images.
Presently, Kathleen is focused on the marshes and bayous of the Louisiana Gulf Coast. The landscape that speaks to her and propels her into the studio is one that reflects the natural world but also has the potential to convey the idea of an internal or emotional landscape.
In the studio, she uses photographs and sketches to begin a piece, then allows her imagination to take the painting where it needs to go. The paintings are done in acrylic on wood panels. Although some of the brush work is gestural, she essentially thinks of these as quiet, contemplative works that invite the viewer to reflect on their own sense of mystery and beauty.
In Our Words
There is a graceful, airy quality to Kathleen Lemoine’s landscapes. Transparent glazes and loose brushwork allow a radiance to shine through her paintings, creating a luminescent effect that is ethereal in feel, yet earthy in composition. These exquisite paintings leave the viewer in a thoughtful mood, enveloping them in an alternate world that is tranquil and serene.
