Because of my background in textile chemistry I am always sensitive to maintaining archival quality.
Joseph Wilson began his painting career 35 years ago after moving to Lexington in the Valley of Virginia; inspiration came form the beautiful landscapes that surrounded him. Initially self taught, he has studied with a number of teachers including Ron Boehmer, Frank Hobbs, Robert Stuart, Zoltan Szabo and Judy Betts.
Joseph’s painting style may be described as a combination of impressionism and realism; striving to paint a scene in the colors he remembers or envisions in the most beautiful light conditions. He was employed for many years in the textile dyeing industry, developing and producing colors on textiles and this experience has been very helpful in developing the colors in his paintings.
Primarily working with oil on linen, Joseph’s paintings are started with a transparent wash on a white background using paint and solvent without white. When the canvas is covered, he then applies thick coats of paint using an alkyd medium.
Joseph has won numerous awards and his pieces reside in many collections throughout the United States and abroad.
Joseph Wilson’s paintings are beautifully rendered depictions of the scenery that surrounds him. Broad brushstrokes and an earthy palette - with some surprising jewel-like tones - work together to create an impressionistic view of the landscape at hand. There is an instant sense of serenity and repose as the viewer basks in the beauty.
