With a BFA in Experimental Film and a MFA in New Genres, both from The San Francisco Art Institute, George Andrews never thought of being an artist as a choice.
George is a painter who has a deep interest in the origins of painting and indigenous painting traditions from around the world. He tends to focus on the constant shift back and forth from the representational to the abstract in painting throughout art history. He has lived with Aboriginal Australians in Arnhem Land and Abstract Expressionists at the San Francisco Art Institute. He is especially drawn to the Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, Surrealists, Cobra, The Situationist International; particularly how all of these traditions have continued to influence contemporary painting.
Using acrylic paint on paper, George paints in the dark. He then lets the paintings lay around and looks at them over and over until he see something in them. He looks for vision to meet vision, where he becomes both the artist and the viewer, through a mixture of chance and intention.
With irrepressible intensity, George Andrews uses acrylic on paper to create tactile pieces that are charged with adrenaline. His work has a Rorschach-like effect, challenging the viewer to make his own assumptions and associations while absorbing the frenetic energy emanating from these pieces.
