Bio

Daniel Stuelpnagel has been painting since 1985, after studying at Davidson College and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Before embarking on a full-time art career in 2001, Daniel worked as a stock-broker and branch manager for T. Rowe Price mutual funds in Baltimore and Washington.

Daniel began painting seascapes in 1992 and developed his unique geometric abstractions beginning in 1995, completing his first series for exhibition in 1998. He has travelled extensively, painting and/or exhibiting in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Barcelona, Spain, northern Italy, Hawaii, Baltimore and Washington, DC.

With the Urban Legends series, Daniel explores the structure and psychology of urban life in the new millennium, which encompasses a broad range of trends and forces that are shaping human society. His creative process combines action painting, architectural drawing, photographic and printmaking techniques, sculptural or reductive processes such as scraping with palette knife (wet) and sanding (dry), and the editorial process of continually evaluating and revising a work in progress until it seems resolved.

Daniel is based in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, at LOAD OF FUN studios in the Station North Arts District.

In Our Words

At first glance, Dan Stuelpnagel's paintings are about pronounced patterns, repetitively exerting themselves in the viewer's eye. Upon closer inspection, though, another world is discovered beyond the grid; tiny microcosms of expressive brush strokes and bold splashes of color, executed with spontaneity and energy. The fusing of these two worlds invites an exploration of the artist's intended metaphor as it applies to our individual experiences.
