My paintings are generated from within. They embrace the intuitive emotion of form, color and composition, in a semi-literal state bordering on pure abstract.
Anthony Steventon was born in the city of Stoke-on-Trent in the United Kingdom. Art was a large part of his childhood and, with ambitions of becoming an art teacher, he enrolled in a local art college as a full time student. Anthony soon discovered that his real passion lie in creating art as opposed to teaching art. To sustain himself, Anthony obtained a degree in Computer Science at a local university, while leaning toward the fine arts in his spare time. On arriving in the United States in 1995, Anthony continued his computing career, but in 2003, moved to Pagosa Springs, Colorado to pursue art on a full-time basis.
Anthony paints exclusively in oils with a palette knife, finding the effect far more tactile and controllable than painting with a brush. He takes inspiration from the works of such artists as Kandinsky, Picasso, Pollack and Kline, citing their art as reactive to the moment; not meant to be understood or explained, but rather to invoke a feeling.
Anthony bases his art on his intuitive feeling for abstract representation of formal subject matter, coupled with a love of color and a firm conviction in the emotional feelings which art generates. The nature scenes he paints are from memory, not only of what he sees, but the underlying emotion associated with the memory.
The combination of layered paint and tactile strokes in Anthony Steventon's paintings result in a feeling of depth and leave the viewer with the perception of palpable energy. These striking paintings are filled with explosive color, begging an emotional reaction and leaving a lasting impression.
